The Peaceful Parenting approach was developed by Dr. Laura Markham and is broken down into three “big ideas”: (1) it is possible (and necessary!) to learn how to remain calm and centered when interacting with your child; (2) a strong connection between you and your child forms the foundation of a loving relationship; and (3) your child will want to cooperate with you when you coach them through big feelings and difficult moments, rather than trying to control them. Parent coaching is a future-oriented conversation where we workshop strategies for you to have a more loving and connected relationship with your kids.

During each one-hour session, we will focus on an interaction with your kids that left you feeling stuck, confused, or overwhelmed. Together, we will reflect on the interaction, which usually involves considering how your child experienced the situation. I then teach you alternative approaches grounded in the Peaceful Parenting framework that might have changed the outcome of the situation.

Parent coaching is not therapy and I am not a therapist. Unlike a therapist, I do not diagnose or treat any disorders or conditions. My role as a coach is to offer forward-looking tools and strategies to help you grow as a parent.

It’s never too late to transform your relationship with your kid. While coaching is best suited for parents and caregivers of kids approximately ages 3-14 years old, that range can be somewhat flexible depending on your kid and your family’s needs. The most important skills in the general approach are appropriate for people and kids of any age. Reach out to me at parentingwithlev@gmail.com or through our contact form to help you determine if you would benefit from coaching.

Much depends on the situation, but it usually takes about six to eight weeks for parents to see a lasting improvement in their relationship with their kids. You will need time to practice and fine-tune the Peaceful Parenting strategies. Additionally, the coaching relationship during this period creates an accountability structure that will help you remember to stick with it and meet your goals.
